“Commodifying Absence: Carbon Offsets to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2025”

Abstract

The University of California, Irvine aims to be carbon neutral in its Scope 1 and 2 emissions (i.e., emissions directly related to campus activities and electricity to power those activities) by 2025. To complement sustainable actions on campus (e.g., implementing more efficient and clean infrastructure), UC Irvine purchases carbon offsets to counterbalance its emissions. This work explores the concept of carbon offsets, the types of offsets, and how offsets can help institutions become carbon neutral.
