Abstract: Geopolitical competition and civil war are on the rise. At the same time, disasters like droughts, earthquakes floods or storms are increasing in frequency and intensity, among others due to climate change. I present insights from a comprehensive study on how disasters shape the dynamics of ongoing armed conflicts, drawing on quantitative and qualitative data from 31 civil wars in 21 countries. While disasters frequently result in higher levels of fighting intensity, they can also offer opportunities for peacebuilding. This insight challenges determinist and one-sided climate-conflict narratives.

Bio: Tobias Ide is Senior Lecturer in Politics and International Relations at Murdoch University and Specially Appointed Professor for Peace and Sustainability at Hiroshima University. He holds an ARC DECRA and has widely published on the intersections of the environment, peace and security, including recently in Nature Climate Change, International Security, and Journal of Peace Research.
