Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (MTSM) Conference

Please join us for the 32nd annual Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics (MTSM) Conference, hosted by the University of Notre Dame, from Wednesday, June 7, at 8:00 a.m. through Thursday, June 8, at 5:00 p.m. The MTSM Conference brings together researchers from diverse fields who are in the early stages of their academic careers to exchange new research results and ideas. Attendance typically spans the Midwest and nearby states, yet all interested researchers are welcome to attend.

Visit the conference website for complete details and register by May 20.

Conference Format

The conference format provides an ideal forum for undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scientists, and junior professors to present their work. This unique opportunity engages researchers in intense discussions about topics of similar interest, enabling camaraderie within other groups and fostering sustained research programs, continuity of accumulated knowledge, collaborations, and graduate and postgraduate opportunities.

Research topics include:

  • Self-assembly
  • Phase transitions
  • Macromolecular dynamics
  • Macroscopic material properties
  • Experimental, theoretical, and computational thermodynamics
  • Statistical mechanics
Important Dates
  • Registration is now open, with a deadline of May 20.
  • Students, postdocs, and faculty are invited to submit a presentation abstract by May 15.
  • Students and faculty are invited to submit a poster abstract by May 20.
Conference History

Ali Mansoori of the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois, Chicago, started the MTSM Conference in 1988. It has since become an annual event, drawing students and faculty from all over the Midwest (and beyond) to discuss their latest work in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics in an informal, yet focused atmosphere. Professor Mansoori organized the first meeting, held at Williams Bay, Wisconsin, and the subsequent meeting the following year in 1989. Interested participants have hosted the conference since then. This year’s conference marks the 32nd MTSM Conference in its history.
