STEM Fellowship Summer Support Program

Graduate School Professional Development

Our summer support program focuses on the National Science Foundation’s Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)—one of the largest, most lucrative, and most prestigious external multiyear graduate fellowships. Additionally, students enrolled in our program will be shown how to identify and apply for other multiyear and yearlong opportunities, and with our assistance, will complete an application for the GRFP or other major award.

In 2013-2014, 100% of the eleven Notre Dame graduate student winners of the GRFP attended the full series of these workshops; in 2014-2015, 100% of the twenty-one Notre Dame grad students who won or received Honorable Mention participated in our events; in 2015-2016,100% of the thirty-three NSF-recognized Notre Dame grad students did so with our help. Our support program attendees have also won major fellowships from a wide range of other agencies, including the NIH, DoE, DoD, NASA, GEM, Ford, and others. We expect even better results this year.

These meetings will consist of three-hour workshop & peer review sessions. Students will also have multiple opportunities to meet individually with the Office of Grants & Fellowships. By the end of the program, students will complete a solid draft of the application materials required for their respective funding applications. These will include a Research Statement and a Personal (Background & Future Goals) Statement. In addition, students will be introduced to a number of sources for identifying other funding opportunities and to general best practices in grant proposal preparation.
