Research
Prof. Taflanidis' research focuses on uncertainty quantification, predictive modeling and design of complex engineering systems (especially problems related to design-under-uncertainty). This work focuses on both fundamental algorithmic developments in simulation-based and data-enabled science (stochastic simulation, Bayesian updating, probabilistic mechanics), as well as on applications to practical problems, especially those that represent grand challenges for the engineering and science community. Performance assessment and optimization of energy-related systems, especially ones representing renewable resources, are key applications that his group has examined the past five years. Specific projects include "Layout optimization of wave energy converters" and "Risk assessment for offshore wind turbines", though the group's interest extends to general topics for which predictive modeling and uncertainty quantification can play a key role in performance evaluation and design.
