Forgash Graduate Fellowships

The John '00 and Karla Forgash Fellowship for Solar Energy Research provides an award of $6,000 to a graduate student engaged in solar energy research with a faculty affiliate, or a faculty member who is willing to become affiliated, to support their stipend, pay for laboratory supplies, and travel to present their research at a national conference. Students apply each fall and are notified in December. The award is distributed in January.
The John '00 and Karla Forgash Fellowship for Energy Storage Research provides an award of $5,000 to a graduate student engaged in energy storage research with a faculty affiliate, or a faculty member who is willing to become affiliated, to support their stipend, pay for laboratory supplies, and travel to present their research at a national conference. Students apply each fall and are notified in December. The award is distributed in January.
This fellowship will support projects that enhance current energy storage technologies and systems*, develop new energy storage technologies and systems, boost grid reliability, improve the integration of more renewable energy, increase efficiencies for generation facilities, lower energy costs, and mitigate any potential negative risks to the environment.
* According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), energy can be stored using technologies, such as pumped hydroelectric, compressed air, flywheels, batteries, and thermal energy storage, as well as flow batteries, supercapacitors, and superconducting magnetic energy storage that are currently under development.
Application Dates
The application process for the 2026 John '00 and Karla Forgash Fellowship for Solar Energy Research and the 2026 John '00 and Karla Forgash Fellowship for Energy Storage Research is now closed. The application process will reopen in the fall for 2027 fellowships.
