Khachatur Manukyan, Research Associate Professor in the Nuclear Science Laboratory, Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Notre Dame, was awarded a Defense University Research Instrumentation Program (DURIP) grant from the Department of Defense.
This grant aims to implement a high‐throughput screening system for accelerated material discovery by combining the predictive power of artificial intelligence methods. In collaboration with Tengfei Luo, Dorini Family Professor for the Energy Studies at Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Dr. Manukyan will create novel materials and supply innovations to DoD Basic Research Programs. The grant allows the purchase of new instrumentation that will advance Manukyan’s ongoing research activities funded by the Army Research Office (ARO) on theoretically-guided processing of materials under extreme conditions, bridge the existing knowledge gaps, and prepare metastable materials with superior properties.
DURIP is designed to improve the capabilities of U.S. institutions of higher education to conduct research and educate scientists and engineers in areas important to national defense by providing funds for acquiring research instrumentation. DoD awarded 147 university researchers totaling $59 million to purchase research equipment in Fiscal Year 2023.
