The Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering continues to grow and thrive, promoting accomplished faculty and adding new faculty to meet the needs of students and research.

Tengfei Luo has been promoted to professor. A faculty member since 2012, Luo studies the fundamentals of nanoscale heat and mass transfer for applications in renewable energy, microelectronics thermal management, and water treatment.

Thomas Juliano has been promoted to associate professor. Juliano focuses on high-speed aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics and leads the Hypersonics Aerodynamics Lab. He joined the faculty in 2014.

Yanliang Zhang has been promoted to associate professor. Zhang is an expert in additive and nanomanufacturing of multifunctional and multiscale devices, thermal science and thermoelectric energy conversion, advanced sensors, and flexible electronics. Zhang joined the faculty in 2017, after four years on the faculty at Boise State University.

Jonathan MacArt joined the department as an assistant professor in January 2020. He received his B.S. in aerospace engineering at Notre Dame In 2013 and a Ph.D. from Princeton University. MacArt and his team in the Reacting Turbulence Lab are developing high-performance computational tools to better understand the interactions of flow physics with additional physical phenomena, including chemical heat release and plasma kinetics.

Matthew Rosenberger will join the department in January 2021 as an assistant professor. Rosenberger specializes in nanoscale materials engineering. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and is completing a postdoctoral fellowship at the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C.

“The 2019-2020 academic year brought many challenges to the University and our department,” said Kenneth T. Christensen, Viola D. Hank Professor and department chair.

“Our faculty and graduate students have risen to the occasion by continuing their research in key areas, exploring ways to address the challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, and adapting courses to provide an interactive educational experience for students online.

“We are so pleased to announce these promotions and the addition of two more faculty members to the department.”
