Research Interests

Prof. Powers performs detailed computations of reactive fluid mechanics in low and high speed flows. He typically addresses detailed systems of hydrogen-air, as well as hydrocarbons such as methane. Fundamental issues of ignition, extinction, flame stability, flame structure are of importance. Prof. Powers also pays particular interest to the accuracy of the simulation, which requires special computational strategies to capture the multiscale nature of such flow fields. He additionally studies the development of rationally reduced models to simulate complex combustion dynamics.
