cSEND faculty receive competitive awards through Notre Dame’s Global Collaboration Initiative (GCI)

cSEND faculty members – Tengfei Luo, Elaine Zhu, Haifeng Gao, and Bill Phillip – were among the inaugural recipients of the highly competitive grants that were awarded through the Global Collaboration Initiative (GCI). Sponsored by Notre Dame International (NDI), nine (9) grants of $10,000 to $20,000 per year, with the possibility of renewal up to three years, were made to Notre Dame faculty engaged in research with colleagues at partner institutions around the world. These projects demonstrate the potential to create meaningful and sustainable exchange and/or research collaborations with colleagues and students at major foreign research universities and other research institutions, and will elevate the University’s visibility in the international academic and research community.  During this inaugural cycle, twenty-four    proposals were submitted from researchers representing more than 15 departments in the Colleges of Arts and Letters, Engineering, and Science, and the School of Architecture.

  • Tengfei Luo (Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame) and Jindal Shah (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) – Identification of Directional Solvent for Low Cost and Low Emission Water Desalination.
  • Y. Elaine Zhu (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Center for Sustainable Energy), Haifeng Gao (Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Center for Sustainable Energy), and William Phillip (Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Center for Sustainable Energy) – Development of Multifunctional and Sustainable Polymer Composite Filtration Membranes for Efficient Liquid Phase Separation and Water Purification.           

The Office of the Vice President and Associate Provost for Internationalization,Notre Dame International (NDI), expects to make up to five awards under the GCI for AY2014-15. The GCI is intended to enable through international cooperation the establishment or continuation of programs of research, scholarship and sustained collaboration that will make major contributions in any field of study. These initiatives should contribute to increasing the internationalization of Notre Dame by elevating the university’s visibility in the international academic and research community.
