Solar Series: Concentrating Solar Energy

Subash Shinde
Dr. Subhash Shinde

Concentrating solar power (CSP) uses mirrors, or "concentrators", to aim the sun's rays at large tubes containing polymeric liquids, or molten salt, for creating and storing heat. This thermal energy can be used in several ways, such as to drive a steam turbine and produce electricity. It also provides a way to store heat after sundown and provide electricity when it is most needed. Dr. Subhash L. Shinde, the newest member of the ND Energy team, will delve into more details and share the knowledge he gained working at Sandia National Laboratories. He will speak on different CSP technologies and plants currently operating in the US, in addition to research and development activities to increase efficiency and reduce cost and risk.

Subhash Shinde joined the Center for Sustainable Energy at Notre Dame (ND Energy) in November 2016 as the Associate Director responsible for research and program development and leading ND Energy’s research initiatives in global development and corporate programs. Prior to joining Notre Dame, Subhash held various leadership positions within Sandia National Laboratories and I.B.M. Microelectronics Division and Research. He has written several articles, including books and book chapters, and is regularly invited to speak at national and international conferences. He has more than sixty U.S. patents and another eighteen internationally, and has received several awards for his research work. Subhash received his Ph.D. in Materials Science from Stanford University and B.Tech in Metallurgical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, India.
